How We Do It

The Challenge
In Kibera one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements children and teenagers face a complex web of challenges rooted in deep poverty. Limited access to food, healthcare, and quality education makes daily life a struggle. Many families cannot afford school fees or supplies, leading to high dropout rates, especially among girls.
Issues like early pregnancy, gender-based violence, and lack of safe spaces further disrupt young lives. Without access to supportive environments, many youth are exposed to crime, substance abuse, and exploitation.
Worse still, there are few outlets for emotional expression, personal growth, or healing putting their mental health and overall well-being at serious risk.
Our Approach
Community Dance Program
Community Dance Program is a cornerstone of Kuza Kipaji’s work an after-school initiative designed to give children in Kibera a safe, structured, and joyful space to thrive after the school day ends.
In a community where unsupervised time often leads to exposure to crime, substance abuse, and exploitation, this program offers a **positive alternative**. Children gather in a protective environment where they are guided by mentors, form healthy peer relationships, and grow in confidence through dance and creative movement.

Safe Spaces
We create secure, supportive environments where children can express themselves freely. These aren’t just physical locations—they are emotional havens that offer refuge from the daily stress and violence of life in the slums. Through dance, children process their emotions, develop resilience, and build social-emotional skills essential for life.
Happy Communitie
Dance brings joy, connection, and hope. It’s a powerful tool for stress relief and community building. Children laugh, move, and create together—forming bonds and building a sense of belonging. This shared joy strengthens their emotional well-being and helps create a more united, hopeful community.
Through Kuza Kipaji is redefining what after-school programs can be offering not just an activity, but a pathway to healing, connection, and transformation.
Mentorship Program

Adolescence is a critical stage of growth but for many teens in Kibera, it’s filled with uncertainty, pressure, and risk. Kuza Kipaji’s Adolescents Mentorship Program provides a safe and supportive space for both boys and girls** to explore their identity, build life skills, and prepare for the future.
Our mentorship sessions cover key areas such as:
* Emotional and mental well-being
* Self-esteem and body awareness
* Healthy relationships and decision-making
* Goal setting and leadership
* Navigating peer pressure and life challenges
Led by trained mentors from the community, the program creates opportunities for open dialogue, trust-building, and personal development. Teens are encouraged to **share, learn, and grow together**, helping them feel seen, heard, and empowered.
By fostering resilience and self-belief, Kuza Kipaji helps adolescents make **positive choices** and develop the confidence to shape their own paths—despite the daily challenges they face.

At Kuza Kipaji, we recognize that no child can learn, grow, or thrive on an empty stomach. The Food First Program is a foundational initiative that ensures children in Kibera have consistent access to nutritious meals, addressing one of the most urgent needs in their lives: hunger.
In a community where food insecurity is widespread, this program does more than fill stomachs—it nourishes minds, bodies, and futures
